Turner Prize Result 2010

About an hour ago the results of The Turner Prize 2010 was announced. What a fucking farce! The winner is Susan Philipsz, a Scottish artist who works with sound. She is the first sound artist to win the Turner Prize. Philipsz’s room in this year’s Turner prize exhibition at Tate Britain consisted of her recorded voice singing the 16th-century traditional Scottish song, “Lowlands Away”.

I’m not saying Philipsz doesn’t deserve to win, but there are so many more people who should have won. For example, Angela de la Cruz, who was one of the 3 runner-ups. A Spanish artist who suffered a brain haemorrhage. While in a coma for several months, she gave birth to her daughter. Her recovery has been slow and is unlikely to be complete. Her works show her struggle through her beautiful, destroyed canvases. Her work is deep while at the same time showing a strong sense of humour, as she calls her works “Paintings behaving badly”.
So. There we go. The winner was annouced. That’s it for another year. Ridiculous.
Thoughts?

  1. Was expected for Susan to win, ‘first to win working with sound’. Angela de la Cruz, that work has very much been done before but obviously the background to it and idea is better than what I have seen before:

Jim Lambie’s Metal Urbain exhibition which was held at the Modern Institute.

I could go on about this debate, the Art World exhausts me as much as you reading this.
